2018 Pre-K/Elementary Camp Descriptions

Handwriting, Fine Motor, and Phonics Camps:

The student will…

  • build his/her confidence in handwriting

  • develop the small muscles in the hands and fingers

  • learn and practice writing his/her name with the correct pencil grip and stroke

  • strengthen hand and finger muscles through engaging exercises and activities

  • work on correct pencil grip and scissor cutting

  • build listening comprehension skills with a focus on retelling

  • focus on pre reading skills and phonics (letter recognition, rhyming, beginning sound identification, print directionality)

 

Bridge to / Get excited for Pre-K Camp:

The student will….

  • practice letter recognition and letter sound identification

  • attend to stories and songs during whole group time

  • practice writing and identifying his/her name with correct letter formation

  • learn pre-reading skills (print directionality, identification of a letter vs. a word)

  • learn and practice one to one correspondence with numbers 1-20

  • recognize basic shapes, build patterns, and compare sets

 

Entering Kinder Reading and Writing Camp:

The student will ….

  • build their confidence in reading and handwriting

  • practice writing his/her name and the alphabet (capital and lowercase) with correct pencil strokes

  • build fine motor skills through engaging activities

  • work on correct pencil grip and scissor cutting

  • build listening comprehension through retelling, predicting, and developing mental images of text read aloud

  • develop letter and letter sound recognition (capital and lowercase)

  • decode and build consonant-vowel-consonant words

  • engage in stimulating reading activities to develop an understanding of story elements  (characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end)

  • create writing pieces using pictures and letters/words

  • develop pre-reading skills: print awareness, rhyming, tracking print, and learning familiar nursery rhymes

  • practice writing his/her name

  • develop and understanding that text carries meaning

 

Bridge to / Get ready for Kinder Camp:

The student will…

  • learn and recognize upper and lower case letters and letter sounds

  • practice writing his/her name with the correct pencil grip and letter formation

  • blend phonemes and identify initial sounds

  • develop confidence in responding to read-aloud and participating in circle time activities  

  • focus on number recognition, identification, one to one correspondence, and creating/comparing sets   

  • discover patterns in math

1st grade Reading and Writing Camp:

The student will…

  • build reading comprehension skills and reading strategies

  • work on reading fluency and strengthen reading stamina

  • learn and practice high frequency words through movement and songs

  • engage in writing activities that reinforce strategies and lessons taught in the classroom

  • create an original writing piece(s) to take home and share with his/her family

 

Bridge to / Get Ready for First Grade Camp:  

The student will…

  • continue practice with high frequency words

  • focus on word decoding skills and fluent reading

  • establish strong number sense and place value

  • discover patterns in math

  • learn strategies for solving word problems

Bridge to / Get Ready for Second Grade Camp:

The student will...

  • focus on word reading skills with authentic texts

  • learn comprehension skills while maintaining fluent reading

  • practice with fiction and nonfiction texts

  • focus on number sense through math facts and place value

  • develop strategies for word problems

Entering 3rd Grade Reading and Writing Camp:

The student will…

  • maintain fluent reading while focusing on comprehension strategies

  • practice retelling texts and holding book conversations

  • learn to read texts differently based on the genre

 

Entering Third Grade Math Camp: 

  • focus on automaticity with math facts and practice with multiplication concepts

  • practice with patterns, tables, measurement, and fractions

  • strengthen strategies for multi-step word problems

 

Bridge to / Get Ready for Third  Grade Camp: 

The student will . . . 

  • build confidence and prepare for a great third grade year

  • strengthen and review reading comprehension skills in both fiction and non fiction texts

  • review and practice writing great sentences, paragraphs and stories

  • develop a stronger math foundation focusing on number sense, place value, math facts and word problems

Entering 4th Grade Reading and Writing Camp:

The student will . . . 

  • instill a love of reading and writing through book clubs and character studies

  • practice key comprehension skills in both fiction and nonfiction texts with a focus on main idea and details, inferencing, drawing conclusions, summarizing, and sequencing. 

  • build a stronger vocabulary 

 

Entering 4th Grade Math Camp:

The student will . . . 

  • prepare for a great year of 4th grade math with engaging games, projects and activities

  • build confidence and develop a stronger math foundation with a focus on place value, decimals, fractions, patterns and tables, and multiplication and division fluency. 

  • develop and practice strategies for attacking multi-step word problems

Bridge to / Get Ready for Fourth Grade Camp:

The student will . .

  • build confidence and prepare for a great fourth grade year

  • build comprehension skills with a focus on summarizing, drawing conclusions, and inferencing 

  • use text evidence to support comprehension in both fiction and non fiction texts

  • review and practice narrative and expository writing with a focus on grammar and conventions

  • develop a stronger math foundation focusing on number sense, place value, decimals and fractions, multiplication and division fluency, and strategies for solving multi-step word problems
